Your First Acupuncture Appointment: What to Expect
Acupuncture is a safe, non-invasive method of therapy that works to alleviate pains, improve bodily functions, and stimulate the body’s natural healing process. It is one of the many techniques used within physiotherapy for pain management, treating soft tissue injuries, and to enhance the body’s own healing chemicals to promote recovery and rehabilitation.
That being said, we understand that undergoing acupuncture can be a daunting experience for someone who’s never experienced it before. While there’s absolutely nothing to be afraid of, we’ll outline exactly what you can expect from your first acupuncture appointment so that you can show up prepared, relaxed, and ready to reap all of the benefits that lie ahead of you!
Your first acupuncture appointment will begin with an extensive consultation, where your AFCI (Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute) certified therapist will inquire about what brought you in to seek acupuncture and your primary concerns as well as additional information regarding your general health and lifestyle, plus a brief and non-invasive physical examination.
You’re welcome and encouraged to ask any questions that may be on your mind, to help you to understand the process and feel comfortable during your appointment. The acupuncturist will work with you to determine the best course of action for your needs, and choose the relevant acupuncture points to help you to reach your goals.
Wear Loose, Baggy Clothes
You will not be required to remove clothing during your acupuncture appointment, though it is a good idea to wear loose, baggy clothing. This will help you to remain relaxed and comfortable, and allow you to maneuver or make adjustments to allow for better access. If you do wear restrictive clothing, however, not to worry – gowns are available to provide you with the most comfortable and comprehensive session possible.
A Pain-Free Experience
Many first-time acupuncture recipients are concerned about experiencing pain during their appointment, but there’s no need to worry. Needles used in acupuncture are significantly smaller than the needles used for administering vaccines or drawing blood, and even those with an aversion to needles often have no issues with acupuncture once the initial nerves subside.
It’s possible you may feel a warm sensation or a very slight prick when the needle first enters your skin, though many patients feel nothing at all. Once the needles are in place, you can expect to feel no sensation whatsoever.
Arrive Comfortable and Energized
It’s generally advised to eat approximately two hours before your acupuncture appointment, and be adequately hydrated. You’ll want to have enough energy in your body to avoid any lightheadedness or dizziness during your appointment, in order to remain comfortable and experience all of the benefits that acupuncture has to offer.
