Post-Natal Massage

Pre and Post-Natal Massage

Massage therapy applied by a Registered Massage Therapist during and after your pregnancy is extremely beneficial for both the mother and baby. An hour treatment is typically provided, and can always be modified to meet any special requirements.

Pre-Natal Massage
What you can expect during a pregnancy massage is to be positioned a bit differently on the table. Rather than lying face down, your treatment will be done with you laying on your side. Pillows will be given to help better support you, and make you feel comfortable. As long as the mother is comfortable, some of the treatment can be done with you positioned lying face up. Your massage therapist will place pillows under yours knees to take any pressure off your low back. Your next prerogative is just to relax.

Some benefits include:

  • Decreased pain & discomfort due to changes happening in your body
  • Minimizing the chance or severity of pelvic, rib & spinal imbalances
  • Help maintain proper posture
  • Increasing general state of relaxation both emotionally & physically
  • Decreased swelling
  • Fewer calf cramps
  • Relief from headaches
  • More restful sleep
  • Decreased anxiety
  • General sense of well-being

During your pre-natal massage there are also benefits to your baby. It facilitates a calmness and relaxation, and can increase general blood flow to the baby.

Our next blog post will talk about the benefits of post-natal massage. For more information about pre and post-natal massage please contact Absolute Pilates and speak with one of our massage therapist.

Post-Natal Massage

Massage therapy can happen as soon as 24 hours after giving birth. A gentle treatment is provided; however, pressure and positioning can be adapted to each individual patient.

Benefits Include:

  • Assist with flushing out lactic acid build up within the tissues from labour
  • Abdominal massage to increase uterine healing (excluding caesarian section)
  • Decreases stress hormones
  • Supports healthy emotional state
  • Re-establishes the integrity of the pelvic structures

Infants can also be nursed during a post-partum massage. While the mother is laying on her side, your baby can be lying right with you.

Post-natal massage can continue with treatments every 3-4 weeks, but usually depends on each patient’s situation.
